Having failed to help people inside conflict zones, the EU must respond by investing more in camps closer to refugees’ homelands because it can’t absorb the flow of migrants, Grybauskaitė said in an interview in Davos.
“Europe as an international community wasted a lot of time and mismanaged the situation while we were able to stop such moves of the people during last years,” Grybauskaitė said on Thursday.
With public resistance on the rise, “I don’t think that we will be able in these conditions to integrate properly these migrants or refugees and we’re also creating an unstable political environment.”
As EU countries are introducing border controls to fend off refugees fleeing conflicts in the Middle East, governments are warning that the union's free movement system might break apart, unless a solution is found.
