Some 23,100 permanent residents emigrated from Lithuania last year, down by 6,200, or 21.2 percent, compared to 2019.

Meanwhile, the number of immigrants increased by 3,000, or 7.5 percent, year-on-year, to 43,100 persons.

According to the statistical office, 5,500 more citizens came to Lithuania than left last year. Moreover, immigrating foreign nationals outnumbered those emigrating by 14,500.

Lithuanian citizens returning from emigration accounted for 48 percent of the total number of immigrants who arrived to Lithuania last year. Among the returnees, 11,800 were men and 9,000 were women. Nearly half, or 46 percent of returning emigrants, came from the United Kingdom.

As estimated by Statistics Lithuania, immigration flows of Lithuanian citizens from the United Kingdom increased somewhat last year whereas emigration flows to the United Kingdom showed a decrease. Lithuanian citizens returning from the United Kingdom outnumbered those emigrating thereto by 3,600.

Men account for nine out of ten immigrants

Some 22,300 foreign nationals came to Lithuania last year, up by 2,600, or 13 percent, year-on-year, and accounted for 52 percent of the total number of immigrants.

Men accounted for 90 percent of immigrants, unchanged from 2019.

Ukrainian citizens accounted for 42 percent of the total number of foreign nationals who came to Lithuania last year, up by 5 percent year-on-year, and Belarusian citizens accounted for 33 percent, up by 1.1 times.

Lithuanian citizens accounted for 66 percent of people who emigrated from Lithuania last year (down from 84 pct in 2019) and foreign nationals accounted for 34 percent (up from 16 pct in 2019).

Men accounted for 62 percent of emigrants last year.

Some 26 percent of emigrants left for the United Kingdom, 16.5 percent – for Ukraine, and 9 percent – for Belarus.

Some 60 percent of emigrants were born in Lithuania, and 16 percent – in Ukraine.
