More than half of the deaths last year were caused by cardiovascular diseases, 56.5%. One in every five died of cancerous tumours, while 7.7% of all deaths were down to external causes.

A little less than half of the diseased (20,529 or 49%) were men. Nearly every second (47.5%) died of cardiovascular diseases, 22.6% succumbed to cancer.

Nearly one in eight (11.7%) of men died of external causes, including accidents (over half of the cases). Suicides accounted for 30.3% of external causes or 3.5% of all deaths among men.

Lethal cardiovascular diseases were much more prevalent among women, accounting for nearly two thirds (65.1%) of all deaths, followed by tumours (17.5%) - mostly breast, colon and ovary cancer - and digestive diseases. Only 3.8% of women died of external causes.
