As Lithuania prepares to receive refugees, Vilnius Vice-Mayor Gintautas Paluckas of the Social Democrats has proposed considering Arab-language kindergarten groups.

"If we're already talking about the hosting numbers, we should start discussing how we will receive them. Maybe not all of them, but some of them will be with their children. We will provide them with social housing, if that is the only problem. But what will they do there behind closed doors," the vice-mayor told BNS on Thursday.

"I do not want to confirm any plans to have the groups but we should answer the question very fast whether we need the groups or not," the politician added.

Lithuania expects to receive the first group of refugees from countries, such as Syria, early next year. The Social Security and Labour Ministry has asked municipalities to specify numbers they are willing to receive.
