Launched in 2016 by the World Photography Organisation and ZEISS, the ZEISS Photography Award rewards the world’s most distinctive image-makers creating outstanding series showing their individual way of seeing the world. The year’s theme, Seeing Beyond: Discoveries encouraged photographers to explore discoveries that transform our everyday lives.

Lithuanian photographer Tadas Kazakevičius was shortlisted for the award.

Titled Between Two Shores, Tadas’ series documents the daily lives of communities living near the Curonian Spit, Kurshskaya Kosa. The result is a poetic body of work which invites us to rethink our notions of society and environment.

"The Curonian Spit is a curved sand dune that stretches 98 km, separating the Balti sea from the Curonian Lagoon. The southern section of the Spit lies in Russia, while the northern part sits in Lithuania. At certain points this peninsula measures just 0,4 km wide, meaning that if you stand in the middle you are never too far from either shore. There is a palpable sense of energy here. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that if you share the land out evenly between all of the people who live in the are the final result is very close to the Golden Ration. You har to experience the space here, to feel it. It’s impossible to get a true sense with your eyes alone", the photographer explains.
