The universities still need to obtain approval from the Seimas, parliament, before launching the merger process.

"It would be a strong humanities university. They have similar programs and Vytautas Magnus University also has a well-developed pedagogical direction," Raimundas Paliukas, chairman of the parliament's Committee on Education, Science and Culture, told BNS.

"Besides, the initiative is coming from the universities themselves and I believe it cannot be stopped," he added.

The MP said that the merger would also contribute to the optimization of the higher education institutions network.

Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have also announced merger plans, he added

Experts say that there are too many universities in Lithuania and concentrating resources would help raise teaching and research quality.
