The festivities began in Nida's Evangelic Lutheran Church and the event was opened by its patron, former President Valdas Adamkus, and the Mayor of Neringa, Darius Jasaitis.

The festival this year is named "Summer of the Century": it begins a new five-year thematic cycle called "Heritage of the Modernity: 100 years after the Great War". The first event in the series will highlight the historical context of the First World War and the cultural heritage of that time.

As is traditional, the festival will hold many music, art and film events.

One of the first events will be the presentation of a book called "1913: the Summer of the Century", written by German author Florian Illies, which, in fact, inspired the name of this year's festival.

According to the festival's organizers, one of this year's most anticipated guests is Silvio Vietta, the pioneer of intercultural European studies and the Professor Emeritus of Hildesheim University in Germany.

Also, there will be a meeting with historian Eligijus Raila as well as a reading of an imaginary meeting of Thomas Mann and Jean-Paul Sartre in the dunes of Nida.

In addition, there will be German, Lithuanian and Poland film nights hosted by Agila Cultural Centre.

Last year, the International Thomas Mann festival ended a three-year thematic cycle, dedicated to writer Czeslaw Milosz.

All events will be held in Lithuanian and German.
