"Lithuanian politicians should be more active and stronger than they were until now, the society should also not be passive. We must remember how important international support was to us in 1989–1991," historian Darius Kuolys, organizer of the protest, told BNS.

About 30 participants gathered outside the embassy, holding slogans "Hands Off Ukraine" and a symbol made by artist Gitenis Umbrasas portraying a star turning into a swastika.

"It is a reminder to the world that Western democracies should not act in a disloyal and blind manner as they did in the first half of the 1900s," said Kuolys.

The participants intend to continue the protest outside the German Embassy later in the day.

"Germany today is a very important player in the European Union's policy, and some public statements of the German leader can be interpreted as untying of hands in the run-up to the Minsk negotiations," said Kuolys.

Over the past few days, Russia opened an open military invasion of Ukraine.
