According to early estimates of Statistics Lithuania, at the end of 2014 the number of inhabitants in Lithuania totalled 2.92 million, it decreased by 21,600 or 0.7 percent, compared to late 2013.

There were two factors behind the decrease of population. First, negative net migration accounted for 58.5 percent of the overall decrease - 12,600 more people emigrated than immigrated. Second, 41.5 percent decrease was determined by negative natural population change - 8,900 more people died than were born.
