"The cooperation agreement between Lithuania and the Order of Malta that was signed today is the result of close cooperation and, at the same time, a new page of our cooperation in areas such as healthcare, social protection, refugees and others," Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis told reporters after signing the agreement.

According to him, Lithuania appreciates the contribution the Order of Malta has made so far and expects a breakthrough in new areas of cooperation.

Baron Albrecht von Boeselager, the Grand Chancellor of the Order of Malta, said after the signing ceremony that new projects normally emerge at the grassroots level, rather than being imposed from above.

"I think it has always been our strength that the projects are developed from the roots, not imposed from above. People working in the villages see what needs exist and then create projects," he said when asked how the Malta of Order's activities in Lithuania might develop after the signing of the agreement.

Established in Lithuania back in 1991, the Order of Malta Relief Organization is now one of the largest social assistance organizations in the country.
