The Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union (LPGU) is planning conservative changes in the field of family policy, despite opposition from its coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party (LSDP), the daily Lietuvos Žinios reported on Friday.

The Peasants and Greens have included their initiatives on sexual education, infertility treatment, abortion and divorce into the draft program of the soon-to-be-formed new government, but the Social Democrats say that they do not approve of these initiatives and are revising the document.

However, even if the LPGU's proposals are not included in the government's plans, they are likely to get the backing of the conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Union of Christian Families and be pushed through the parliament.

LPGU Chairman Ramūnas Karbauskis says that the party will not seek agreement with the coalition partner on issues where compromise is impossible.

"The members of the Seimas will be free to vote as they wish. We have agreed that if the Social Democrats, along with the Liberals, are in a minority on this issue, this will not be deemed to be a breach of the coalition agreement," he said.
