Research done by an NGO in Lithuania has found that Lithuania is one of few European Union states that still have special schools for children with disabilities. Children who are unable to access their schools are homeschooled.

This information was collected in an alternative survey conducted by the Lithuanian Disability Forum. They claim that this situation arose because more than half of the schools in Lithuania are inaccessible to people with disabilities, because teachers do not have the appropriate qualifications, and because no appropriate teaching materials are available.

According to the study, these conditions also impact the small number of disabled students in higher education. There are only about 1,000 students with disabilities in higher education, which is less than one percent of all students.

It is believed that about 10% of people in Lithuania have some sort of disability.
