According to a press release circulated by Meno Fortas theatre company, the order is the second most important and prestigious award granted by Italy to civilians. It is awarded to Italian and foreign citizens whose work and creativity have contributed to Italy's friendship and cooperation with other countries.

Nekrošius received the award from Italy's Ambassador Stefano Taliani de Marchio in Vilnius earlier this week, the theatre said. At the ceremony at the ambassador's residence, Taliani de Marchio said that the Lithuanian theatre director was being awarded for his long presence in Italy's theatrical life and presentation of Lithuanian plays to audiences across Italy every year, as well as the unique opportunity for Italian actors and students to attend his mastership courses or through Nekrošius' productions in Italy with local actors.

The ambassador noted Nekrošius' work at the Vicenza historic Teatro Olimpico where Nekrošius worked in 2012 and 2013, staging plays Letters to Lucilius and Life of Galileo.
