The Iraqi men were busted in early hours of Wednesday in southern Lithuania aboard two cars, a Ford Puma and a Chrysler Voyager, with Swedish license plates that had just entered Lithuania from Poland.

An Iraqi citizen, 39, behind the wheel of the Ford provided the border guards with legitimate Swedish travel documents. His passenger, a 33-year-old Iraqi national, was also legally in the Schengen zone and had a Swedish foreign passport.

Meanwhile, examination of the Chrysler Voyager revealed that the driver had no personal or car registration documents. He claimed to be a 27-year-old citizen of Iraq. Aboard the car, the border guards found seven more men who provided a batch of documents of asylum-seekers issued in Greece, Serbia and Macedonia. The men were aged between 19 and 46.

The two vehicles are believed to have been bound for Finland.

This was the fourth case over the past ten days when Lithuania officers detained Iraqi nationals entering the country illegally from Poland. According to data available to the State Border Guard Service, Finland, not Lithuania, was their final destination.
