Volunteers in the country's supermarkets asked people to buy food products with long shelf life and donate them to the organization. Based on preliminary data, shoppers across Lithuania donated food worth more than LTL 1.23 million (EUR 357 thousand). It is around 20 percent more than what was donated in spring.

Head of the Food Bank charity and support foundation Vaidotas Ilgius says that the results can be explained by growing generosity and the fact that people in Lithuania feel more solidarity and empathy for the less fortunate members of the society. According to Ilgius, the president and other well-known personalities also inspired people to contribute more. Retailers also encouraged to participate in the charity campaign by offering discounts on certain products.

Approximately 140,000 people took part in the autumn Food Bank campaign that was held in 73 cities and towns and donated more than 380,000 products with long shelf life. Some 7,690 volunteers helped collect the products.
