The captain of the barge was immediately arrested, and on Thursday morning, local police officers confirmed that the captain had been drunk. The barge had also lacked registration and other required documents.

One passenger drowned, while a number of others, including children, sought refuge on a small peninsula. They were extracted by rescue personnel and passing civilian motorboats.
