A new August heat record was set in Lithuania on Sunday, with 36.5 degrees Celsius reported in Tauragė at 4 p.m., weather services say.

Weatherman Vytautas Sakalauskas said the highest August temperature before that had been recorded in Naujoji Akmenė on 10 August 1992 – the mercury then stood at 36 degrees.

The absolute heat record was set in the country on 30 July 1994 when daytime temperature reached 37.5 degrees in Zarasai.
