Lithuanian archaeologists have established an island in the lower River Dange as the location of the first wooden castle built in 1252, thus revealing one of the biggest mysteries of the founding of the port city of Klaipėda, Lietuvos Žinios daily said on Friday.

The castle was later replaced by a stone citadel.

"The guesses for decades were that the first castle was built by the Livonian Order somewhere else than the current location – it was to the north, while others thought it was to the south. Now it is clear – they used the same island. The conclusions were drawn after this year's archaeological tests based on paleogeographic data," Gintautas Zabiela behind the conclusion told the daily.

Archaeologists examined an area of 1,000 square meters, about 2-5 m deep.
