Vilnius University (VU) has send a letter to Hungarian leaders to express its support for the Budapest-based Central European University (CEU), which may be forced to leave Hungary due to legislative changes.

In their letter to Minister of Human Capacities Zoltan Balog, Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the CEU, the Lithuanian university's heads express their concern over the CEU's fate, noting that "many of the presently active Lithuanian academicians have studied at the CEU" and that "Lithuanian universities have drawn from its experience and still maintain close ties".

"Restriction on operational conditions of the CEU or, even worse, its closure, would be a loss not only for its lecturers, researchers and students, but also for the whole professional scientific and academic community of the region and Europe," the letter reads.

In his letter to CEU Rector and President Michael Ignatieff, Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius invited the rector to come to the Lithuanian capital to discuss the possibility of relocating the university from Budapest to Vilnius.

The mayor last Wednesday made the letter public on his Facebook page.

The CEU is facing problems due to the Hungarian government's plans to restrict its right to issued diplomas recognized both in Hungary and the United States.
