"Kharkov is highly symbolic place – it is merely 40 km away. It is a city that knows what freedom is and how it should be defended. Back in 2014, pro-Russian separatists had even taken over the local administration and sought to fully seize the region and destabilize the situation. It was the people of Kharkov who stood united to defend their city, fought for it and took to the streets – not just the National Guard but also citizens and even football fans. As a matter of fact, Kharkov was a symbolic border bastion of fights for freedom, the city of strength of the people of Ukraine," Grybauskaitė said in an interview broadcast on the national radio LRT on Friday.

During the stay in Kharkov, the Lithuanian president will meet with Poroshenko in hopes of discussing the security situation, implementation of the Minsk accord and enforcement of the European Union – Ukraine association agreement. The two heads of state will also speak about corruption, restructuring of the prosecutor general's office, courts and the state sector, as well as ensuring of transparent business environment.
