NATO on Thursday invited Montenegro to become the 29th member of the Alliance. This is the seventh expansion in the Alliance's history, and it is being made over the objections of Russia.

The decision has yet to be ratified by the US Senate and the parliaments of other NATO states.

Montenegro Prime Minister Milo Đukanović said that his country will stand shoulder to shoulder with other countries in the US-led alliance. The former Yugoslav republic was bombed by NATO aircraft just 16 years ago.

Russia accused NATO of trying to surround it and countries friendly with Russia, like Serbia, and promised to do everything it must to maintain its national security and interests.
