Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius on Monday called on the European Union to exercise patience and consistency in relations with Russia and draw up new sanctions over the annexed Ukrainian region of Crimea.

Following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, the Lithuanian minister said the EU should be patient and consistent on its Russia policy and should wait for the existing sanctions to work.

"Any rush to normalize relations between the EU and Russia would be counterproductive at this stage. It is important to draw up stepped-up measures before the December European Council for the implementation of the policy of non-recognition of Crimea's occupation," the minister was quoted as saying in a statement.

EU member states are now discussing proposals to impose new restrictions for investments in Crimea but no decisions have been made yet.
