Lithuania and Poland must move from official events to concrete cooperation in their relations, Poland's former president Bronislaw Komorowski said in Vilnius on Wednesday.

"It is worth developing something that has a deep meaning, that is, cooperation between local authorities, because local authorities are closer and accurately reflect citizens' expectations and way of thinking," Komorowski told reporters.

"However, that cooperation between municipalities should go beyond official events and meetings and must turn into cooperation between regions, cities and businesses. I think this is the future," he said.

The former president called for deeper and faster changes in bilateral relations between the neighboring countries.

Komorowski noted that what Lithuania and Poland have in common is not only their history, but also their membership of the EU and NATO and present-day interests.

"I have hope that, regardless of who is in power in both countries, their societies, their people will demand that these relations be as close as possible and that cooperation take place in all important areas," he said.

Komorowski called for continued cooperation between the two countries within the framework of European institutions, because this is "concrete money, specific programs that are important for the development of the Lithuanian and Polish economies, their integration into the European road, railway and power grid systems".

Komorowski served as Poland's president between 2010 and 2015. His visit to Vilnius comes as Lithuania marks 25 years since the adoption its Constitution.
