The post has been set up in an effort to better coordinate the positions and actions of different Lithuanian authorities at both the national and international levels with regard to the project that is being developed in the neighboring country, the ministry said.

The ambassador will, among other things, present Lithuania's position and will try to rally international support.

He will cooperate and exchange information with all national and foreign bodies responsible for nuclear and radiation safety and environmental aspects, as well as with governmental and non-governmental organizations and parliaments.

Lithuania's foreign, environment and energy ministers decided to appoint a special ambassador for the Astravyets issues on Tuesday.

Degutis has been working at the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry since 1991. His has in the past served as Lithuania's ambassador to Poland and Israel.
