The Vilnius Regional Court has so far received no response from Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev whom it wants to testify as a witness in a mass trial related to the bloody events of January 13, 1991 in Vilnius.

The court has issued a summons both by conventional means and electronically, but there has been no response from him.

"We have received no answer from Gorbachev and his fund," Judge Ainora Kornelija Macevičienė told BNS on Tuesday.

According to the summons, Gorbachev's name has been mentioned by other witnesses in the trial and, therefore, he is requested to tell the court what he knows about the circumstances surrounding these events.

The court is currently hearing victims' testimonies in the trial, which has been has been going on for almost a year now.

Sixty-five persons have been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity for their roles in the bloody crackdown on protesters. Most of the defendants are Russian citizens and are tried in absentia. Only two defendants are present in court.

Fourteen people were killed when Soviet troops stormed the TV Tower and the Radio and Television Committee building in Vilnius on January 13, 1991.
