The Belarusian call to provide official information about the course of decommissioning of the Lithuanian Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has to do with the questions raised by Lithuania in connection to the Astravyets nuclear utility under construction in Belarus, says an official of the Lithuanian Environment Ministry.

"We received their letter by email and we will see what they ask. This is a mirror case. If we ask for something, they then see how things are here with us. This is fully in connection with the Astravyets issue," Vitalijus Auglys, director of the ministry's Pollution Prevention Department, told BNS.

In his words, the Ignalina issue cannot be linked with the questions about the Astravyets nuclear utility under construction in Belarus some 50 km from the capital Vilnius, as Lithuania is closing its utility, while Belarus is building its.

Earlier on Tuesday, Interfax news agency said that Belarus would turn to Lithuanian institutions for information about the course of decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP.

"There have lately been reports in the media, including the Lithuanian media, about some problems in connection to the decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP. Therefore, Lithuania will shortly receive specific inquiries about it," Vladimir Markov of the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection said at the ministry's news conference.

Lithuania has been criticizing Belarus for failure to meet with security standards in the Astravyets construction, while Minsk has dismissed the criticism as ungrounded.
