"The Rail Baltica processes are running smoothly and according to schedule. Today we will go to the site to see the results of the construction of the Rail Baltica railway from Kaunas to the Lithuanian-Polish border," he said on LRT Radio.

Butkevičius later in the day is to visit the Rail Baltica segment between the Kaunas Railway Station and the Kalvarijos Railway Station.

According to the prime minister, more than 90 percent of the planned work has already been done.

"I expect that the European-gauge will be completed on time. We hope that the European-gauge railway will reach Kaunas as early as this autumn," he said.

The European-standard gauge railway project, worth 3.7-5.2 billion euros, will connect Helsinki with Warsaw through Tallinn, Riga, Kaunas and Vilnius and will be extended up to Berlin. The railway from the Lithuanian-Polish border up to Tallinn is planned to be completed by 2024.
