One year after Lithuania inaugurated its liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipėda, Energy Minister Rokas Masiulis says that the facility has brought security and competition for the first time in Lithuania's gas market history and can be called a regional terminal.

"Gas supply security means that no one can press Lithuania any more by threatening to close the gas tap. Exactly one year ago, Gazprom's dominance in the Baltics came to an end as our Independence opened up door to all gas markets of the world. Just very recently, gas users in Lithuania were paying the biggest price in Europe. Last year, the gas price in Lithuania decreased the most among all countries in Europe. The LNG terminal made the plans to create a common Baltic gas market a reality. The Independence can be called a regional terminal because it can meet nearly all the gas demand in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia," the energy minister said.

The Klaipėda-based LNG terminal can meet 100 percent of Lithuania's natural gas demand and 90 percent of that of neighbouring Latvia and Estonia.

The Independence, the regasification and gas storage vessel, was built in South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.

The vessel is 294 metres in length, 46 metres in width and 47 metres in height. Her speed is 18 knots. A total of 25,000 tonnes of steel were used for the construction. The vessel has 4 LNG storage tanks of a total capacity of 170,000 cubic metres.

Gas is supplied to the terminal with the help of gas tankers. So far, 6 gas tankers have come to Klaipėda port.
