Wednesday's opening of a representative office in Poland by Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) marks a shift in focus to the West, the state railway company's chief executive officer said.

"The old management perhaps looked more eastward, but we see great potential in the West, too," Mantas Bartuška told reporters during the opening ceremony in Warsaw.

According to the CEO, the new office will facilitate negotiations with Poland on opening a link between Vilnius and Warsaw and will help ensure the implementation of the Rail Baltica European-gauge railway project.

Lietuvos Geležinkeliai also has representative offices in Russia, Belarus, China and Kazakhstan.
