The Lithuanian government has designated additional 10 million euro to satisfy demands of the teachers trade union. However, teachers still have not given up a plan to hold a strike in around 16 percent or 300 out of the country's 2,000 schools on December 8.

From January 1, 2016, for the first time in six years, salaries will be raised for all educators in the country.

Per-student funding (the so-called students' baskets) will be raised by 34 euro, although the number of students in the country is declining every year. The fund for retired educators will be increased by 1.5 million euro.

The chief editor of the magazine Reitingai, which ranks Lithuania's schools, Gintaras Sarafinas, said on the radio Žinių Radijas: “We see that numbers of students and teachers are decreasing. <…> As far as I can see, the behaviour of educators, they are meeting to strike and what message do they send to students, parents, employers and all the community? They will announce that they are paupers and live like the poor. <…> It will be yet another blow to the prestige of the teaching profession, the authority of the teacher. To hope afterwards that students will be choosing that profession is naive.”
