Lithuania’s prime minister has once again instructed supervisory authorities to maintain tight supervision over preparations for the adoption of the euro in the country and, if necessary, to impose penalties on breachers of requirements established for the period of currency changeover.

“We do not intend to overlook any cases of abuse and artificial inflation of prices of goods and services in the run-up to the euro. We have a set of legislative remedies at our disposal, we will exert very stringent control and will definitely not overlook any cases of wilful violations,” Algirdas Butkevičius said in a press release issued by the government’s press service.

The period of dual display of prices in Lithuania begins on 22 August. At the same time, market supervisors will start checking practical compliance with the requirements. The checks will continue six months after the switchover to the euro.

Lithuania will adopt the single currency on 1 January.
