Ms. Grybauskaitė emphasises that only quality higher education can ensure Lithuania‘s competitiveness, economic growth and innovations. According to the president, it is necessary to raise the quality of education, adjust study programmes so the fit the needs of the labour market and the state, encourage innovation.

Lithuania surpasses most European states in the share of the population with higher education, but is only in 39 place in the Global Innovation Index. Forty-four percent of employers say that university and college graduates do not have adequate knowledge and skills.
