Efforts to hold a referendum on Lithuania’s switchover to the euro and to preserve the current national currency, the litas, have fallen through as the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania has ruled that the decision by the Central Electoral Commission (VRK) not to register a referendum initiative group and not to issue any signature sheets thereto is legitimate.

“The court has decided to turn the complaint down as unfounded,” Neringa Lukoševičienė, the court’s spokeswoman, told BNS.

The court would substantiate its decision in more detail somewhat later, she added.

In April, the election panel refused to register an initiative to call a referendum on the preservation of the litas. The group behind the initiative called to amend the Constitution to make the litas the only national currency in Lithuania and the Bank of Lithuania – the sole issuer of currency in the country.

At least 300,000 signatures of eligible voters are needed for a referendum to be held.

Lithuania plans to introduce the euro in 2015.
