The Lithuanian Association of Hotels and Restaurants wants the short-term accommodation rental activity to be regulated at the national level, saying that hotel owners are now subject to much more taxes and requirements than apartment owners, the business daily Verslo Žinios reported on Tuesday.

"The association and the Economy Ministry and Statistics Lithuania were close to finding a solution, but the process has stalled for some reason. It's been exactly a year since our meetings started," Evalda Šiškauskienė, the association's president, told the paper.

Šiškauskienė denied that the short-term accommodation rental sector posed significant competition to hotels.

According to her, the number of landlords listing their properties for short-term rental on Airbnb and Booking.com is on the increase, but they are in competition only with smaller hotels with 15 to 25 rooms. It is small hotels in resort towns that face the biggest competition from short-term rentals.

The European Commission is expected to publish by the end of the year a set of guidelines to help EU member states deal with the short-term accommodation rental regulation problems.
