The new law will also ban the organising of competitions, games, promotions or sweepstakes that will encourage the purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The amendments will also prohibit to allow the buyer immediately and (or) within a certain period of time or under certain conditions after the purchase and sale contract to win a prize, get a gift or a supplement to alcoholic beverages.

The amendments will take effect on November 1.

Parliamentary Health Committee deputy chairman Antanas Matulas said he hoped that it will help reduce alcohol consumption.

Lithuania’s Department of Statistics said the most alcohol is sold during discount sales.

The current law bans giving extra alcoholic beverages as a bonus, as an attachment to the product or as a gift, to organize distribution of samples free of charge except for tasting in exhibitions and fairs, or to sell specialized promotional advertising publications made in the Republic of Lithuania or foreign countries.

It also prohibited to involve persons under 18 years of age in promotional activities.
