Additional speed limits may be imposed in Lithuania due to the continuing heat spell, the Road Administration said on Friday.

"Amid the extreme heat, the road surface becomes more slippery and softer, possibly leading to a longer stopping distance, affecting the asphalt surface and causing ruts. This is particularly due to heavyweight transport. Therefore, special road signs may be put up in such places to avoid danger for drivers and the road surface," the administration's acting director Egidijus Skrodenis told the national radio LRT.

In his words, traffic restrictions may also be imposed, if the road signs do not work.

This year's biggest heat wave is expected in Lithuania on Saturday, with temperatures climbing to +35 degrees Celsius.
