Kaunas Airport is coping with increased traffic as most flights are being diverted from Vilnius to the smaller airport after Lithuania on Friday closed its main airport for the first time in Europe, the airport's operator said.

We had a morning peak and there were no complaints from passengers. Queues are very short. Infrastructure is functioning in an excellent way," Donatas Voveris, chief operating officer at Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports), the operator of the country's three major international airports, told reporters on Friday.

Many flights will be diverted from Vilnius to Kaunas, some 100 kilometers away from the capital, for 35 days after the country's main capital was shut on July 14 for a major runway renovation.

Two temporary terminals -- one for arrivals and one for departures -- have been built at Kaunas Airport.

According to Lietuvos Oro Uostai, 13 out of 16 airlines have temporarily moved their flights from Vilnius to Kaunas. The smaller airport is expected to handle a total of 370,000 passengers during the 35 days, including 300,000 passengers diverted from the capital.

It is estimated that 10,000 passengers will go through Kaunas Airport daily.
