"This was hardly a secret, we have known for a long time about these products coming from Poland where they are cheaper due to lower VAT," Minister Virginija Baltraitienė told LRT radio on Friday.

Lithuanian officers carried out over 200 raids across the country this week and detained 10 suspects. The police say that 17 companies might have been processing and selling illegally imported poultry from Poland.

A separate investigation will look into why the illegal business had escaped the radar of the State Food and Veterinary Service.
