Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis says the decision was made during the budget balancing as funding is being increased for other areas.

"Because that's the reality today. And the reality is that all areas lack funding. We focused on what's the most important, and that is single parents with children and disadvantaged families," the prime minister told journalists when presenting the next year's budget on Monday.

Social Security and Labor Minister Linas Kukuraitis underlined the decision was made to focus on the socially most disadvantaged people and the child benefit will go up by 20 euros from January for disabled children and children for large families on low income.

The Social Democratic Labor Party of Lithuania, part of the ruling coalition, is of a position that the child benefit should be increased to 70 euros per child, and to 100 euros for large families on low income.

Skvernelis says the existing decisions should not affect the ruling coalition and the decisions might still change after the Seimas adopts amendments that would allow increasing revenue.

"The coalition won't collapse if the bills increasing revenue are adopted. Those amounts and dates might change," Skvernelis said.
