Lithuanian Railways and the Polish company Przewozy Regionalne have signed an agreement on cross-border rail service through the Polish-Lithuanian state border and regular services on the pan-European Rail Baltica gauge route Kaunas-Bialystok-Kaunas will start from June 17.

Lithuanian Railways chief executive Stasys Dailydka said that the last passenger train from Poland to Lithuania direct, without changing for connection, travelled in 1939.

"After such a long period renewed cross-border rail links is an important strategic step for both parties. Especially because we are beginning to exploit the European Rail Baltica track said the Lithuanian Railway’s chief.

One way tickets will cost €11 for the five hour journey and within days tickets can be purchased at ticket offices, on trains and on the internet. The initial trains are expected to have a capacity of 127 seats.

"Lithuania has opened a new gateway to the West. I am glad that we have succeeded in implementing the first project phase of Rail Baltica,” said Minister Rimantas Sinkevičius.
