Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė expects to appoint a new prosecutor general by the end of this year, the president's spokeswoman Daiva Ulbinaitė said after a meeting with the Board of the Seimas (parliament).
On Friday Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with legal experts to discuss how to ensure transparent and effective work of the Prosecutor General's Office. Experts have noted that independence of the prosecutor general has been established in the Constitution. However, there have been repeated attempts to make the institution into a tool for politicians which is diminishing confidence in the state, the president believes.
After the Lithuanian parliament rejected two nominees for the post of prosecutor general, President Dalia Grybauskaitė says that MPs should vote on such nominations openly rather than in a secret ballot, as is currently the case.
