The Soviet statues on the Green Bridge in central Vilnius will not be removed from the Register of Cultural Monuments, a special panel at the Department of Cultural Heritage, which evaluates immovable cultural heritage objects, decided on Tuesday.
A special council that held a meeting at Lithuania's Department of Cultural Heritage on Tuesday asked specialists to evaluate artistic value of Soviet-era statues on the Green Bridge in central Vilnius.
Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis signed a law amending the criteria for cultural artifacts to be listed as heritage. From now on objects marked with Soviet or Nazi symbols will not be included in the Register of Cultural Heritage.
Vilnius Municipality will issue a new call for tenders for the restoration of Soviet statues on the Green Bridge in central Vilnius. The contractor will this time be allowed to remove the statues from the site during renovation.
