Chancellor Merkel pledges support to Lithuania's efforts for Astravyets safety

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged support to the Lithuanian efforts of ensuring safety of the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Belarus, however, does not speak about blocking the plant on the scale of the European Union (EU).
In an unconventional effort to convince EU officials that Belarus' nuclear power plant is a safety hazard, the Lithuanian government has arranged a hot-air balloon ride for the bloc's energy commissioner to show him how close the construction site is to the Lithuanian capital.
Lithuania has been too slow to absorb EU aid for the 2014-2020 financing period, which may decelerate economic and wage growth and result in losing a part of European support, the Finance Ministry has warned.
